Petrol Price Skyrockets Amid Crude Oil Slump
Nigeria's petrol price has risen by 9% to N1,310 per litre despite a 5% drop in crude oil prices. According to reports, MRS, a major downstream player, increased its retail price to N1,310 per litre from N1,205 per litre in Lagos and its environs.
The domestic petrol depot prices continue to move differently from international crude oil benchmarks, highlighting the growing influence of local supply, refining, logistics, and market conditions on downstream fuel prices. OilPrice.com reported that Brent crude stood at $88.10 per barrel, down 0.47%, while West Texas Intermediate, WTI, fell 0.16% to $83.40 per barrel.
The divergence between crude and domestic petrol prices could have significant implications for filling stations, motorists, and the wider Nigerian economy. Marketers may face pressure to maintain or increase pump prices to protect margins, particularly where transportation, financing, and other operating costs remain high.
