Petroleum Ministry Pushes Districts to Help Households Switch from LPG
The Indian Petroleum Ministry has issued a letter to chief secretaries across states and Union Territories, urging them to provide district-level support for households to switch from liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to piped natural gas (PNG).
This move is aimed at accelerating the transition to PNG, which the ministry considers a safer, cleaner, and more efficient cooking fuel that aligns with India's energy goals.
The government has notified the Natural Gas and Petroleum Products Distribution Orders of 2026 and LPG Control Orders under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955, to enforce this shift.
These orders prohibit households from retaining both LPG and PNG connections where piped gas is available and allow discontinuation of LPG supply if consumers fail to apply for PNG after due notice.
