Petrolia Hospital Evacuated After Contractor Hits Gas Line During Sprinkler Installation
A natural gas leak at Bluewater Health's CEE hospital in Petrolia forced the evacuation of the Emergency Department and Acute Care unit on Wednesday evening, September 10, 2026.
The incident occurred just before 8 p.m., when a contractor was drilling through a wall to install a sprinkler system and came into contact with a gas line in the basement kitchen area.
The Petrolia and North Enniskillen Fire Department and Enbridge Gas responded quickly, shutting off the gas supply. Ambulances were redirected to Sarnia for about three hours during the incident.
No injuries were reported, and patients have since safely returned to their rooms. Normal operations have resumed at the hospital.
