Petronas and PTT Seal 35-Year Gas Pact in Southeast Asia
Malaysia's Petronas and Thailand's PTT have reached a landmark agreement on a long-term production-sharing contract for a major gas block in their jointly administered offshore territory. The deal, which covers Block A-18-01 in the Malaysia-Thailand Joint Development Area (MTJDA), extends development of the existing block beyond its current expiry date and incorporates an adjacent exploration area.
The 35-year framework, which took effect on January 1, 2026, is seen as a crucial step towards bolstering regional energy security. The MTJDA has long served as a reliable source for both Malaysia and Thailand, supplying power plants and industrial users with natural gas.
Ainoor Abizzurin B Abdullah, director of PC JDA, highlighted the importance of the deal, stating that it 'reinforces our shared commitment to maximise value through enhanced resource monetisation and operational synergies.'
