PETRONAS, Malaysia's state-owned oil and gas company, has entered into an agreement with Japan to supply emergency liquefied natural gas (LNG). The deal was signed by PETRONAS LNG Ltd, a subsidiary of PETRONAS, and the Japan Organisation for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC) at the LNG Producer and Consumer Conference 2026 in Tokyo.

The agreement establishes a flexible framework to enhance Japan's energy security while balancing Malaysia's domestic energy needs. This development underscores PETRONAS' role as a reliable LNG supplier to Japan, particularly during an evolving global energy landscape.

According to Datuk Adif Zulkifli, executive vice-president and chief executive officer of gas and maritime business at PETRONAS, the agreement reflects the trust built between PETRONAS and JOGMEC over many years. By establishing a more agile framework for future LNG supply arrangements, PETRONAS is better positioned to respond to evolving energy needs.
