Philippines Boosts Energy Security with Major Natural Gas Discoveries
The Philippines has made significant natural gas discoveries off Palawan island group west of Manila, providing a major boost to the country's energy security. According to reports, two wells - Malampaya East 1 (ME1) and Camago 3 - have produced substantial results, with combined estimated reserves of about 222 billion cubic feet of natural gas.
The discoveries are part of the Malampaya Phase 4 project, which is expected to extend the life of the country's main domestic natural gas source. The new resources will reduce the Philippines' reliance on imported liquefied natural gas and give the government greater flexibility in managing energy markets.
The existing Malampaya gas well has supplied fuel to power plants serving Luzon for over two decades, but its original reserves have been declining. The renewed exploration campaign under Service Contract 38 changed that trajectory, with Prime Energy announcing that it is on track to deliver first gas from the Malampaya Phase 4 development by the fourth quarter of 2026.
