Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen led a trade mission to Japan and the Philippines, focusing on agricultural and energy exports. The trip comes about three weeks after he ordered state budget cuts amid a shortfall.

The delegation met with Japanese flour-milling companies to discuss expanding beef, pork, and wheat exports. Pillen said Japan has committed to a 10% ethanol blend in its gasoline supply by 2030, which could translate to 1.2 billion gallons of demand. In the Philippines, they discussed voluntary 20% ethanol blends, with Japanese officials showing interest in aviation fuel from Nebraska.

The delegation included farmers, ranchers, and industry leaders from the state's ethanol sector, alongside Nebraska Department of Economic Development officials. State Sen. Rita Sanders characterized the trip as a way to build relationships and deepen ties with the Philippines, citing regional tensions near the China Sea.
