PNG Adoption Sluggish in Madhya Pradesh Despite City Gas Distribution Push
Madhya Pradesh's adoption of Piped Natural Gas (PNG) has been slower than expected, despite years of expansion under the City Gas Distribution (CGD) programme. Official data shows that as of May 31, 2026, the state had only 3.36 lakh domestic PNG connections, ranking eighth among states and Union Territories.
The Indore geographical area accounted for the highest number of PNG connections at 1.35 lakh, followed by Gwalior with 66,629. However, Bhopal, which is one of the state's largest urban centres, had a relatively low 39,432 connections.
Industry experts believe that a larger PNG network could have significantly reduced dependence on LPG cylinders during the recent supply crunch, as piped gas is delivered continuously through underground pipelines and remains insulated from transportation bottlenecks and panic buying.
