PNG LNG Trade Set for Boost as PetroChina Signals Buying Interest

Papua New Guinea's (PNG) liquefied natural gas industry is poised to benefit from increased trade opportunities in China after senior executives from PetroChina International met with key government ministers and energy sector leaders in Port Moresby.

The discussions, which took place on Monday and Tuesday, centered around future LNG trade, with PetroChina expressing interest in purchasing PNG-produced LNG through both spot market transactions and long-term supply agreements.

PetroChina representatives outlined the company's capacity to increase purchases of PNG LNG, describing the country as an important supplier to China's growing energy market. Chinese Ambassador Yang Xiaoguang emphasized that China remains committed to strengthening economic cooperation with Papua New Guinea and supports an open trading environment.

Ambassador Yang warned against halting spot market purchases of PNG LNG, calling it short-sighted and stating that such actions would ultimately produce negative consequences. He noted that China boasts the world's largest middle-income group and a supersized market, and is ready to expand LNG imports from PNG and deepen trade cooperation.
