PNG Push Dents India's LPG Consumption Amid Gulf Disruptions
The government's push for piped natural gas (PNG) connections has led to a decline in domestic LPG consumption, falling by 15.9% to 11.3 million tonnes during April-August 2026 compared to 13.4 million tonnes in the same period last year.
This drop comes amidst disruptions in LPG supplies from the Gulf region due to the West Asia conflict, which forced India to increase domestic production and source additional supplies from countries like the US, Russia, and Canada.
The government has been implementing measures to expand PNG usage for household cooking, including awareness drives and a nationwide campaign to encourage households to switch to piped gas. In August, an incentive scheme was approved to accelerate PNG expansion, providing additional supplies of lower-priced domestically produced gas for new billed household connections.
