Poland and Baltic States Boost Security Amid Russian Attack Concerns
Concerns about potential Russian attacks on critical infrastructure have led Poland and the Baltic states to increase security measures. Lithuania has strengthened protection of key assets, including its liquefied natural gas terminal in Klaipėda and the LitPol Link electricity interconnection with Poland.
The military is authorized to deploy up to 30 personnel equipped with vehicles, as well as a vessel or boat with a crew, to support the Public Security Service. This enhanced security was ordered by Defense Minister Robertas Kaunas on July 17 and will continue through August 19.
Latvia has also increased security around critical infrastructure, including a dam near Riga and an underground natural gas storage facility in Inčukalns.
In Poland, energy company Orlen is exploring alternative natural gas import routes due to concerns about its usual supplies. Gaz-System, which operates the Świnoujście liquefied natural gas terminal, is working under heightened alert conditions.
