Prairie Wetlands Imperil Canada's Wheat and Canola Harvest

Canadian farmers are facing a critical harvest period as wet fields across the Prairies hinder fieldwork in Saskatchewan, Alberta, and Manitoba. The prolonged rainfall has sharply slowed down fieldwork, putting wheat, durum, and canola crops at risk of losing quality and value.

The delays come at a crucial time for one of the world's largest agricultural exporters. By September 7, Saskatchewan farmers had harvested only 27% of their crops, compared to a five-year average of 58%. Alberta was about 21% complete by September 8, less than half its 43.5% historical pace.

A Saskatchewan producer estimated that downgrading his crop from No. 1 to No. 2 or No. 3 could reduce prices by 30 cents to $1 per bushel and potentially cost his operation more than C$100,000. The concern is increasingly about quality and margins, not simply how many bushels farmers ultimately harvest.

As time remains before snow and frozen soils typically arrive in late November, every additional day of moisture can damage wheat and durum quality. Prolonged rain can reduce kernel weight and color while encouraging sprouting, mold, and fungal problems that may not be visible before grain is tested.
