Putin Pushes for BRICS-Backed Insurance Mechanism Amid Sanctions
Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed a new insurance mechanism and collaborative grain market initiative for BRICS nations during a summit in New Delhi. The move comes as sanctions on Russian ships have increased insurance costs, making it difficult for Russia's 'shadow fleet' to operate.
Putin emphasized that BRICS countries can operate independently of the West-dominated trade systems, citing their own routes for moving capital, labor, and technologies. He also highlighted the potential benefits of creating an alternative to the current global governance structure.
The proposal has been met with interest from other BRICS members, including China and Iran, who are seeking to break away from the Western system and build a new economic order. India, currently presiding over the BRICS summit, has attempted to prevent the grouping from becoming an anti-Western bloc under its leadership.
Putin's call for a more independent approach comes as grain exports from Russia have been severely impacted by Ukraine's drones, with global South nations urged to work together to address traditional and non-traditional security threats.
