Putin Sees Chance for Ukraine Peace Deal as Kyiv Cites New Dynamic
Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed optimism about a potential deal to end the war in Ukraine during an economic forum in Russia's far east on Thursday. He stated that several countries, including the U.S. and China, are willing to support a peace settlement. However, he emphasized that the ultimate responsibility for resolving the conflict lies with Russia and Ukraine.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said in Kyiv that he expects a 'new dynamic' in peace efforts due to increased diplomatic engagement worldwide. He declined to elaborate further but hinted that more news would be forthcoming.
Despite Putin's positive assessment, both sides have continued to escalate hostilities. The U.S. has been distracted by the Iran war, and Russia and Ukraine have engaged in long-range air attacks on each other's territory. Hostilities at sea have also increased, pushing up global grain prices.
