Putin's Peace Comments Spark Wheat Price Reversal
Chicago Board of Trade wheat futures dropped Thursday following Russian President Vladimir Putin's indication that a peace deal to end the war in Ukraine may be possible.
Putin's comments at an economic forum in Russia's Far East prompted profit-taking among traders who had driven prices up over the past month due to concerns about disruptions to Black Sea grain exports from Russia and Ukraine.
Putin noted that restarting negotiations had become more difficult due to Ukrainian attacks on shipping and Kyiv's request for civilian aircraft to avoid Russian airspace, but he still left the door open for a potential agreement.
Some traders warned that Putin's statements did not necessarily mean an immediate reduction in military activity, and physical disruptions to Black Sea grain shipments remained unchanged.
