Putin's Ukraine Comments Spark Wheat Price Decline
Russian President Vladimir Putin's comments on a possible peace agreement in Ukraine sent wheat futures plummeting on Thursday, reversing their recent rally. The sharp decline came after Putin indicated that negotiations could restart to end the conflict.
Putin noted at an economic forum in Russia's Far East that restarting talks had become more difficult due to Ukrainian attacks on shipping and Kyiv's request for civilian aircraft to avoid Russian airspace. He stated that there was a chance of a peace agreement, but this did not necessarily mean an immediate reduction in military activity.
Ukraine's grain exports have been declining, with the country's combined grain and oilseed exports falling to 1.2 million metric tons in August from 2.5 million tons in July, according to Ukrainian traders union UGA.
