Putin's War Escalation Threatens Global Grain Markets
Grain and oilseed prices surged on Wednesday following reports that Russian President Vladimir Putin is considering escalating the war in Ukraine, which could disrupt grain vessel traffic in the Black Sea.
The Chicago Board of Trade saw significant gains, with soft wheat futures shooting up by a limit-up 45 cents per bushel. Hard red winter wheat prices rose by around 40 cents, while Minneapolis spring wheat improved by 30 cents.
Severe weather threatens crops in the U.S. Central Plains today, bringing high winds and large hail to some areas. European Union soft wheat exports have also been impacted, totalling 2.38 million tonnes since July 1, down 1.18 million from last year.
Soybean prices rose nearly 30 cents due to the Black Sea news and strong export demand, with a private sale of 333,000 tonnes of 2026-27 soybeans to China announced by the U.S. Department of Agriculture this morning.
