Qatar Removed from Fitch's Negative Watch List Amid Reduced Energy Risks
Fitch Ratings has removed Qatar from its negative watch list after expressing concerns over regional conflict risks to energy infrastructure and LNG exports in March.
The credit-rating firm announced this decision on September 5, indicating it no longer considers an immediate downgrade for Qatar from its current rating of 'AA', which is among Fitch's highest grades, indicating a very strong ability to meet financial commitments and a very low expected risk of default.
Fitch cited reduced risks since March and the impact of the war on the credit profile taking longer to discern as reasons for removing Qatar from negative watch. The agency also highlighted solid sovereign assets, one of the world's highest GDP per capita levels, and ongoing expansion of gas production as key strengths supporting the country's credit profile.
Despite this, Fitch maintains a 'Negative Outlook' for Qatar due to ongoing risks surrounding LNG shipments through the Strait of Hormuz. Disruptions caused by damage to energy facilities during the war on Iran continue to affect exports and shortages persist.
