Qatar Slashes Spending Amid Strait of Hormuz Disruptions
Qatar is cutting government spending in response to the economic impact of the ongoing US-Iran conflict, which has disrupted liquefied natural gas (LNG) revenues. Government departments face budget reductions of up to 30%, while funding for overseas aid has been sharply reduced by about 85%. Qatar's reliance on LNG exports makes it particularly vulnerable to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.
The International Monetary Fund forecasts that Qatar's economy will contract by 8.6% this year, the largest contraction among Gulf states. The country's substantial financial reserves, including the Qatar Investment Authority, which manages around $500 billion in assets, may help mitigate the impact of spending cuts.
A Qatari official stated that despite economic pressures, the country remains capable of managing the crisis and maintaining its long-term economic plans, citing experience in dealing with previous regional and global crises. However, prolonged disruption could put further pressure on government finances, leading to additional spending cuts.
