QatarEnergy Buys $1B in US LNG Amid Iran Conflict

QatarEnergy (QE) has purchased $1 billion worth of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the US as a gesture of goodwill towards its Asian clients. The move is aimed at reducing disruption to key customers following the Iran war, which halted Qatari gas exports through the Strait of Hormuz.

The 33 spot LNG cargoes were bought from US producer Venture Global LNG and other suppliers, with around 80% of Qatar's LNG shipments typically exported to Asia. The purchases dwarf last year's four cargoes, with QE seeking to protect its reputation as a reliable gas supplier.

About 28 of the 33 cargoes have already been delivered, with the remaining five en route to South Korea, Taiwan, and India. This move comes as the US has become the world's largest LNG exporter in recent years, with producers like Venture Global benefiting from demand for alternative supplies.
