QatarEnergy Extends Force Majeure on LNG Deliveries to Edison

The Qatari gas supplier QatarEnergy has informed Italian utility Edison that it will be unable to deliver five additional liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargoes, extending a force majeure clause until early November. This latest extension is the result of damage caused by missile strikes in the spring, which targeted a major Qatari industrial site and damaged LNG production facilities.

The contract between QatarEnergy and Edison dates back to 2009 and underpins a significant share of Italy's gas supply. The dispute has been ongoing since the initial announcement in the spring, with each new communication from QatarEnergy pushing back the force majeure deadline and increasing the number of undelivered cargoes.

Edison has stated that it is able to offset these shortfalls through market purchases, notably from the United States, and asserts that it is not passing the situation on to end customers. The group emphasizes its longstanding partnership with QatarEnergy and its efforts to diversify gas supply sources, as illustrated by the development of Australia's first commercial shale gas output at Beetaloo.
