Qatar's Gas Export Crisis: Seeking US LNG Amid Blockade and Damage

Qatar's gas export industry has taken a significant hit due to recent events. According to Bloomberg, QatarEnergy is seeking long-term contracts for LNG purchases from American producers, marking the first time the country has looked outside the Middle East to meet customer obligations. This decision comes after the Iranian missile strikes damaged two production modules at the Ras Laffan plant, leaving it with only 83% of its export capacity intact.

The damage and subsequent decline in exports have resulted in significant losses for Qatar, estimated to be around $24 billion, equivalent to about five months of state revenues. During the six months of the war, Qatar sent only 18 shipments of LNG, a reduction of 96% compared to the same period last year when it sent 509 shipments.

The Strait of Hormuz blockade has further exacerbated the issue, making shipping risks almost impossible and contributing to the near-complete stoppage of exports. It's expected to take three to five years for QatarEnergy to recover from these losses.
