Qatar's Luxury Jet Gift to Trump Fails to Protect Gulf State From Iran War
A luxury jet valued at $400 million was given to US President Donald Trump by Qatar in June 2026, but it failed to provide protection from Iran's war. The Boeing 747-8 was delivered to Joint Base Andrews on June 19, and its formal handover took place on July 9. Trump described the gift as 'a no-strings gift' rather than a negotiated arrangement.
Qatari officials, however, said the transfer was 'a very simple government-to-government dealing.' The jet's arrival sparked bipartisan criticism in Washington over concerns it could violate the Constitution's foreign emoluments clause. Critics argued that accepting the gift without congressional approval could be unconstitutional.
The controversy was soon overshadowed by events as the US and Israel launched strikes against Iran, killing its Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on February 28, 2026. This ignited what is now referred to as the 2026 Iran war. Within days, Tehran widened its retaliation beyond Israel and the US to Gulf states it accused of enabling the campaign.
Qatar's Ministry of Defence confirmed that drones launched from Iran struck energy facilities inside the country, though no casualties were reported. QatarEnergy was forced to halt liquefied natural gas output at its Ras Laffan and Mesaieed complexes after the strikes. The disruption proved especially damaging because Qatar has few alternatives to seaborne exports.
