Quantum Computing Enters Oil Industry as Aramco Partners with Quantinuum
Quantum computing is making inroads into the energy sector, thanks to a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed between Quantinuum and Saudi Aramco. The deal aims to explore how quantum computing can optimize operations across the energy industry.
The MOU covers three key areas: logistics optimization, energy resource management, and simulating molecular interactions for CO2 storage. This collaboration adds another layer to the Gulf region's aggressive push into advanced computing.
Aramco isn't new to quantum ambitions. The company has been building quantum capabilities for years through its partnership with Pasqal, a French quantum computing company. In 2025, Aramco and Pasqal deployed Saudi Arabia's first quantum computer, a 200-qubit neutral-atom quantum processing unit.
With Quantinuum, Aramco gains access to a different quantum architecture, trapped-ion systems, as opposed to neutral-atom technology used by Pasqal. This partnership also expands the footprint of Quantinuum, which has been on a partnership tear in 2026.
