Rain Relief Brings Market Uncertainty for Ontario Farmers

The recent rains in southwestern Ontario have brought relief to farmers in the area, saving their crops for now. However, as we head into late August, it's essential to refine marketing plans and be prepared for price fluctuations.

According to Philip Shaw, a farmer who received approximately 2.5 inches of rain within a five-day period, the effects on his corn and soybeans were immediate. The crops began growing again, and their appearance improved significantly.

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) estimates a big crop is almost here, with U.S. corn projected to come in at 16 million bushels based on a yield of 183 bushels per acre and planted acreage of 95.3 million acres. This would be the second-largest crop on record.

On the soybean side, the USDA predicts the largest soybean crop ever in the U.S., with a predicted yield of 53 bpa and a total production of 4.457 billion bushels.

The war in Iran, Russia, and Ukraine has created a jittery market for grain prices, making it challenging to predict price movements. Shaw notes that this is a different market than previous years, with the influence of social media posts, AI-generated news headlines, and predictive markets affecting trading algorithms.
