Rand Paul Confirms Fort Knox Gold Reserves Amid Ongoing Conspiracy Theories
Senator Rand Paul has put to rest some of the lingering questions surrounding Fort Knox's gold reserves. The Kentucky senator recently toured the vault and confirmed that all 147 million ounces of gold are indeed present. This comes as a response to long-standing conspiracy theories suggesting that some or all of the gold may have been stolen.
The US Mint lists 147,341,858 ounces at Fort Knox, with an official value of $42.22 per ounce, a price frozen in 1973. At today's market price, the gold reserves would be worth approximately $644 billion. However, Paul's argument focuses on the fact that the dollar has lost significant value since its decoupling from gold in 1971, with a decline of around 85% in purchasing power.
Prior to his tour, Trump had suggested auditing Fort Knox, and Elon Musk had also brought attention to the issue by questioning who had confirmed the gold's presence. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent responded at the time that the gold was accounted for, but it seems that Paul's visit has provided further assurance.
Paul used his tour as an opportunity to discuss the dollar's value and the impact of inflation on the economy. He noted that Congress spends into oblivion with no regard for the national debt, which is absorbed by the Fed. This highlights the ongoing debate about the Federal Reserve's role in managing the economy.
