Ravenna Knutsen Enters Service as Small-Sized LNG Carriers Gain Ground
Knutsen OAS Shipping has welcomed a new vessel to its fleet, the LNG carrier Ravenna Knutsen. The medium-sized ship will start operating in the Mediterranean from the third quarter of 2021 and was built at the Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD) in Korea.
The Ravenna Knutsen measures 180 meters in length and 28.4 meters in width, with a cargo capacity of 33,300 cubic meters of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in three tanks. It has a speed of 15 knots powered by a 6,710 kW engine.
The LNG transportation market has seen a shift towards smaller vessels, as the demand for alternative fuel grows and supply infrastructure develops worldwide. According to Clarksons Research, small-sized LNG carriers (less than 40,000 cubic meters) currently account for 32.2% of the existing fleet, rising to 55% for carriers with a capacity between 40,000 and 100,000 cubic meters.
