RBI Gold Reserves Hit 880 Tonnes Amid Uncertainty Over Private Holdings
The Reserve Bank of India's gold reserves have reached a new milestone of 880.52 metric tonnes as of June 2026, according to official data provided to the Rajya Sabha on July 28, 2026.
This marks a steady accumulation phase for the central bank as it continues to diversify its foreign exchange reserves, a strategy shared by many global central banks seeking to reduce reliance on fiat currencies like the U.S. dollar.
Historical data shows that the RBI's gold holdings have grown significantly over the last three years, with an increase from 794.63 tonnes on March 31, 2023, to 822.10 tonnes by March 31, 2024, and then a more aggressive period of buying in the fiscal year ending March 2025, when the central bank added 57.48 tonnes, bringing the total to 879.58 tonnes.
The pace of acquisition has since slowed, with an addition of less than one tonne reported in the year ending March 2026.
