RBI Reiterates Resilience of Indian Economy Amid External Uncertainties
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has reiterated that the Indian economy remains resilient despite external uncertainties, including the Iran war and a deficient monsoon. The RBI's monthly economic report highlighted that high-frequency indicators suggest robust industrial performance and a resilient services sector.
According to the report, the domestic economy has navigated external uncertainties well, driven by healthy demand conditions and the strong performance of the industrial and services sectors. This resilience is expected to continue, with the RBI likely to keep interest rates unchanged at its 5 August policy meeting.
The southwest monsoon, which accounts for about 70% of India's annual rainfall, is crucial for the $300 billion farm economy and has a significant impact on food prices, rural demand, and broader economic output. The Iran war adds another risk to the Indian economy, as it imports more than 85% of its crude oil needs.
In related news, silver imports into India have slowed sharply due to a new licensing regime that disrupted shipments. As a result, local premiums for silver have reached a multimonth high, with most banks yet to secure the necessary permits.
