RBI Shifts Tone on Inflation as Oil Prices Rise

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is still in wait-and-watch mode, but its tone has shifted since June. Inflation is now a concern, with consumer prices reaching 4.45% in July, their highest level in 19 months and above the RBI's 4% target.

Ongoing tensions in the Middle East are contributing to higher oil prices, with Brent crude trading near $92 a barrel on Wednesday. This volatility is affecting India, which imports most of its crude, leaving inflation, trade balances, and the rupee exposed when prices rise.

The RBI's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) unanimously left the repo rate at 5.25% in August but hinted that it may need to tighten monetary policy if oil, food, and other costs spread through the economy. RBI governor Sanjay Malhotra said any evidence of these risks materializing 'may need policy tightening.'

The MPC is concerned about second-round effects from supply shocks, which could raise business costs and influence household inflation expectations.
