RBI Signals Potential Rate Hikes Amid Inflation Concerns
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has surprised investors by hinting at potential interest rate hikes in the near future. The RBI's August meeting minutes revealed a growing concern about inflation risks, with Deputy Governor Poonam Gupta suggesting that a rate hike could occur later this year.
This hawkish shift in tone comes after RBI Chief Sanjay Malhotra stated just two weeks ago that Indian inflation remains manageable, leading to market expectations of no rate changes. However, the central bank unanimously kept the repurchase rate at 5.25 per cent and maintained its neutral stance.
The minutes also highlighted external members Ram Singh and Saugata Bhattacharya's concerns about the potential need for policy recalibration or swift adjustments. As a result, bond yields rose, with the benchmark 10-year government bond yield increasing by up to 4 basis points to 6.86 per cent.
Firms such as Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and Nomura Holdings Inc. have revised their rate hike expectations in response to the RBI's shift in tone. The RBI's next policy meeting is scheduled for October 5-7, which will likely be closely watched by investors and markets.
