Record-Breaking Gas Prices Ahead of Labor Day
Crude oil prices remain above $80 per barrel due to ongoing conflict in Iran and restrictions on shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.
The national average for regular gasoline is at a record high of $4.10 per gallon, beating the previous high set in 2023. The Oregon average has jumped 12 cents to $4.89 per gallon, while Washington's average price increased by 10 cents to $5.37 per gallon.
The switch to winter-blend fuel is underway, which may bring some relief from high prices. However, Marie Dodds, public affairs director for AAA Oregon/Idaho, notes that 'drivers can expect pump prices to remain elevated for this time of year.' She adds that large decreases in gas prices are unlikely as long as the conflict in the Middle East continues.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has issued an emergency waiver to move up the transition date to September 1, from the usual September 15.
