Record Copper Prices Fuel Investment Boom
Copper prices have surged to record highs this year, reaching $14,300 per ton on the London Metal Exchange. This uptrend is expected to continue in the long term due to increasing demand for copper.
The metal is essential for various applications, including power grids, electric vehicles, renewable energy systems, and data centers supporting artificial intelligence (AI). Analysts at S&P Global predict that copper demand will rise by 50% to 42 million metric tons by 2040 from the current level of 28 million tons.
This supply-demand imbalance has strengthened the investment case for copper. According to Jon Lapp, founder and financial planner of Haven Financial Advisors, it's best to limit a dedicated copper allocation to 1-3% of a portfolio, with 5% as an upper limit for those with high risk tolerance.
