Record Foodgrain Output Keeps Indian Cereal Prices Stable
India's cereal and pulse prices have remained stable over the past year due to record foodgrain production and adequate government stocks. The Minister of State for Food and Consumer Affairs, B L Verma, revealed this information in Parliament on August 4.
The country's edible oil prices, however, have been influenced by global market trends due to India's heavy import dependence. Among vegetables, potato prices have remained relatively stable, while tomato and onion prices saw a slight seasonal variation.
According to the Department of Consumer Affairs, retail prices of 41 food commodities are tracked through 579 price monitoring centers across the country. The minister noted that agri-food prices tend to fluctuate due to factors such as seasonality in production, supply chain disruptions, and rise in international prices.
