Record Forex Reserves and Crude Oil Production Mark Major Milestones for India
India's foreign exchange reserves have reached a record high of $729.33 billion as of August 21, 2026, according to data from the Reserve Bank of India. This marks a significant increase from the previous record of $728.49 billion set in February 2026. The substantial reserve accumulation provides India with a stronger cushion against external economic pressures and is estimated to be sufficient to cover over 11 months of imports.
The weekly rise was supported by gains across several major components of India's foreign exchange reserves, with the largest component, Foreign Currency Assets (FCA), registering an increase of $9.48 billion during the week. The improvement in the overall reserve position further strengthens India's capacity to manage external-sector risks and maintain stability amid fluctuations in global financial and currency markets.
In a separate development, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has begun commercial crude oil production at the Ashoknagar field in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. The field is producing high-quality light crude with an API gravity of approximately 40-41 degrees, which can be efficiently converted into products such as petrol and diesel.
