Record Gas Prices Fuel Winter Worries in Europe
Natural gas prices in Europe have reached record highs, causing concerns among experts about the upcoming winter season. CEOs of Enel and OMV warn that high natural gas prices are affecting inflation and may worsen if the winter is colder than average.
The high prices are largely due to low storage levels, with facilities currently only 30% full compared to around 90% at the same time last year. This is partly because domestic production in Europe is limited, with the Netherlands' Groningen field reducing output and North Sea fields also struggling.
Gazprom's delivery of gas to Europe is also being closely watched, as some analysts suggest that the company may be limiting supplies to maintain high prices at European trading hubs. This would help Gazprom maximize revenues from existing contracts, which often have prices indexed to hub prices.
