Record Prices Fuel Fresnillo's Interim Profit Surge
Fresnillo, a Mexico-focused silver and gold producer listed on the London Stock Exchange, reported a significant increase in interim profit due to sharply higher realized precious metals prices. The company's shares rose as the higher prices flowed straight through to earnings, with operating costs largely fixed in the near term.
The realized price of an ounce has climbed substantially, resulting in most of the uplift landing as profit rather than being absorbed by cost inflation. Fresnillo has also been working through grade and throughput challenges at several of its Mexican assets, and the pricing environment has provided ample cover while those operational issues are addressed.
The company's enhanced cash generation allowed it to lift distributions to shareholders alongside the results. The strength across the precious metals complex has been a notable support for the FTSE 100 during a stretch when industrial metals producers have lagged.
