According to the US Energy Information Administration (EIA), natural gas production in the United States is projected to reach a record high of 122.5 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) in 2026, up 3.4% from last year's record.

The EIA's August 2026 Short-Term Energy Outlook notes that this growth is largely driven by increased output from the Permian and Haynesville regions. The Permian region, spanning Texas and New Mexico, is expected to produce an average of 29.2 Bcf/d in 2026, a 6% increase from last year.

The higher crude oil prices, averaging $84 per barrel through July 2026, have supported drilling activity in the Permian region, resulting in both crude oil and natural gas production increases.
