Record Wheat Harvest Opens $1.5 Billion Export Window for India
India's record wheat harvest has created a $1.5 billion export opportunity due to policy liberalization, according to ASSOCHAM.
The government has shifted specified wheat varieties and related products from 'Prohibited' to 'Free,' expanding market access for Indian producers and processors.
This shift will support export earnings in key markets such as Egypt, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Algeria, and the Philippines, where India enjoys a competitive pricing advantage and geographic proximity.
India's record wheat production of 121 MMT in 2025-26 against domestic consumption of around 111 MMT has resulted in a comfortable stock position, with 51.3 MMT available for export against the prescribed buffer norm of 27.5 MMT as of May 28, 2026.
The global wheat market is expected to decline due to weather disruptions, geopolitical tensions, and fluctuations in production and prices, making India's wheat a more attractive option for importing countries.
