Record Wheat Production Fuels India's $1.5 Billion Export Hopes
India's wheat export prospects have brightened due to record production and comfortable domestic stocks. The country produced a record 120.7 million tonnes (MMT) of wheat in 2025-26, retaining its position as the world's second-largest wheat producer. Wheat stocks in the Central Pool stood at 51.3 MMT as of May 28, surpassing the prescribed buffer norm of 27.58 MMT for July 1.
The ASSOCHAM report notes that India's wheat export volumes remain modest relative to its surplus production capacity. However, with the government easing export restrictions, Indian suppliers now have a more favourable environment to tap into global markets.
Bangladesh is seen as a key market for Indian wheat exports, with the country importing around 6.7 MMT of wheat in 2024-25 and India being one of its primary suppliers. Other potential markets include Egypt, Indonesia, Algeria, Morocco, and the Philippines.
