Red Sea Shipping Risks Escalate as Houthi Rebels Target Oil Tankers

The Red Sea remains a high-risk region for shipping despite recent attacks by Houthi rebels. Despite threats from Iran-backed Houthis, dozens of vessels continue to navigate the narrow Bab el-Mandeb Strait. In fact, according to Kpler data, 43 vessels crossed the strait on Thursday, an increase from 35 the previous day.

The threat of disruption in the Red Sea has forced several ships to alter course and execute U-turns before completing their journeys. This is due to growing uncertainty regarding the conflict and maritime safety. The Houthi rebels have targeted at least three oil tankers in the past week, with the latest strike occurring on Friday.

The war between the United States and Iran has severely curtailed transit through the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial maritime corridor that previously carried approximately one-fifth of global oil supplies. In response to the hostilities, Saudi Arabia has been rerouting millions of barrels of crude oil daily via an overland pipeline connecting the Persian Gulf to the Red Sea.

However, this alternative supply line faces heightened risk after the Houthis announced plans to target shipping linked to Saudi Arabia. Initial indicators reflected immediate disruption, with nearly a dozen vessels either turning back or completely avoiding the strait, according to Kpler data.
