Renewables Dominate Canada, Fossil Fuels Reign Supreme in US
Renewable energy sources power most of Canada's electricity generation, but fossil fuels still dominate in many parts of the United States. According to a map based on data from September 2025, natural gas is the leading source of electricity in over half of U.S. states, while hydroelectricity dominates much of Canada.
Canada generates 67% of its power from renewable sources, largely thanks to hydroelectric power. In contrast, renewables account for only 22% of the U.S. energy mix. Natural gas has become a leading source in many parts of the country due to the shale boom and the retirement of coal plants.
However, there are still regions where fossil fuels play a major role. Coal remains the top power source in several states, including West Virginia, Wyoming, and Kentucky, while Alberta and Saskatchewan rely primarily on natural gas. Nuclear power also leads in certain areas, such as Illinois and Ontario.
