Renewables Hit Record High as British Gas Imports Soar

New government data confirms that renewable energy generation in Britain reached a record high in 2025.

The Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) notes that this growth in renewables, particularly solar power, has reduced the need for foreign gas imports to generate electricity.

Jess Ralston, Head of Energy at ECIU, points out that with gas prices at a four-month high, renewables have helped stabilize energy bills by shifting older, less efficient gas plants offline and lowering wholesale electricity prices by almost a third last year.

The data also shows that imports of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) from the United States were up 38% in 2025 compared to the previous year, making the US the second-largest import source behind Norway.
