Agriculture took center stage during a U.S. Senate debate at the Nebraska State Fair as Republican Senator Pete Ricketts and Independent challenger Dan Osborn outlined competing visions for supporting the state's farmers, ranchers, and rural communities.

The two candidates agreed that President Donald Trump's decision to temporarily waive tariffs and allow up to 300,000 metric tons of imported ground beef into the United States was a mistake. They both opposed the short-term policy, with Ricketts arguing it creates uncertainty for producers and makes it harder for ranchers to expand herds, which he said is the long-term solution to lower beef prices.

Ricketts defended targeted tariffs as a tool to create a more level playing field for American products in international markets. He pointed to his work promoting Nebraska agriculture during trade missions as governor. Osborn agreed that targeted tariffs can be effective but warned broad, across-the-board tariffs increase costs for consumers, manufacturers, and homebuilders.

The candidates also sparred over ethanol policy and the federal tax package known as the 'One Big Beautiful Bill'. Osborn criticized provisions tied to the federal clean fuel tax credit, arguing that a larger share of benefits should go directly to corn growers rather than ethanol companies. He pledged to pursue changes that would deliver more value to producers.
