Rising Costs Push US Farmers to the Breaking Point
Agricultural leaders are sounding the alarm on a deepening crisis in America's farms. The cost of fertilizer has more than doubled since 2020, and fuel costs surged following the war in Iran.
Cy Prettyman, Ohio Farm Bureau's first vice president, grows corn and soybeans with his family in north central Ohio. He pre-paid for fertilizer before prices jumped this spring but notes other costs like fuel have been steep this growing season.
Carie Starr, co-owner of Cherokee Valley Bison Ranch, has seen rising costs for hay and high fuel prices. She's had to drive two hours one way to get her bison processed, adding $100 to each fill-up.
