Rising Oil Prices Threaten Indian Economy with Higher Import Bills
India's crude oil import bill is expected to surge due to rising international prices. Brent futures rose over 2% to around $99 a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate crude gained almost 3% to about $94. The increase in crude prices will put pressure on India's trade balance and the rupee.
India imports over 88% of its crude requirements, making it vulnerable to fluctuations in international prices. A sustained increase in prices can lead to higher fuel costs for consumers and increased inflationary pressure.
According to Prashant Vasisht, senior vice president at Icra Ltd, the renewed hostilities between Iran and the US pose a challenge for global oil supplies. The Strait of Hormuz, a key route for energy shipments, has seen traffic slow sharply due to the conflict.
