RLNG Shortage Blamed for Prolonged Electricity Outages in Pakistan

The Power Division in Pakistan has indirectly attributed prolonged electricity outages to a shortage of Re-Gasified Liquefied Natural Gas (RLNG) required to operate three RLNG-based power plants in Punjab.

The situation was exacerbated by the suspension of contracted gas supplies from Qatar due to a force majeure situation, and the delayed arrival of an RLNG cargo further worsened the fuel shortage.

The Power Division stated that temporary load management measures were implemented during nighttime peak hours, resulting in a decline of around 3,600 MW in electricity generation. The Mangla hydropower project also saw a decrease of around 195 MW in generation, widening the gap between supply and demand.
