Rongsheng Weighs Deal for Alberta Oil Amid Canada-US Tensions

Rongsheng Petrochemical Co., a Chinese refinery, is considering an agreement to buy oil from Alberta's proposed million-barrel-a-day pipeline to British Columbia. This deal would be in addition to its current purchase of heavy crude from the Trans Mountain Pipeline at its 800,000-barrel-a-day refinery on China's east coast.

Alberta approached Rongsheng about a binding contract for the new pipeline project, according to people familiar with the matter. The potential deal could help lessen Alberta's dependence on the United States, which is increasingly strained by the Trump administration's tariff onslaught.

Alberta plans to announce project details, including the planned route, by July, with construction starting as early as late next year. However, the project faces stiff pushback from Indigenous groups in the area and the province's Premier David Eby.
