Rosebank Oil Drilling Delayed After Equipment Dropped in North Sea
Production at Britain's largest undeveloped oil and gas field, Rosebank, has been delayed due to an accident on April 18 when drilling equipment was dropped into the North Sea.
The incident occurred while the platform was being repaired after a court challenge by environmental groups. The platform, hired from Norwegian company Odfjell Drilling, is now back at Rosebank but not yet operational.
Industry estimates suggest that the field will produce 300m barrels of oil over its 25-year lifespan. However, Adura, the company responsible for Rosebank, has stated that production is unlikely to occur until some point in 2027 due to the delay.
The incident adds pressure on Andy Burnham's new government, which is under scrutiny from the fossil fuel industry to allow oil to be retrieved from the site. Some Labour MPs believe enhanced domestic production of oil and gas would help tackle the cost of living by improving energy security amid global instability.
