Royal Caribbean's Icon Class Gets a Major Upgrade
Royal Caribbean's third Icon-class ship, Legend of the Seas, was delivered to Meyer Turku in Finland on June 10. The ship will begin its European season with a July 4 debut from Barcelona and Civitavecchia. Its most notable innovation is the use of six Wärtsilä 46TS-DF dual-fuel engines, which are more efficient than those used on the first two ships in the class.
The Legend's new engines can run on liquefied natural gas or marine diesel oil and switch between fuels without losing power or speed. They also have a platform designed for future upgrades to synthetic methane, methanol, ammonia, and hydrogen as these fuels become commercially viable.
